Researchers from Virginia Tech have attempted to create a robotic hand that they have optimized to achieve near-human appearance and performance. The robotic hand, known as Dexterous Anthropomorphic Robotic Typing hand or simply DART hand, is capable to type at a rate of 20 words per minute, compared to the average human typing speed of 33 words per minute with two hands. Using a total of 19 servo motors and wires as tendons, the DART hand can be integrated into a humanoid robot to perform tasks such as typing, reaching objects, and opening doors.
